BookTour: All's Fair in Vanities War Review and Giveaway

All's Fair in Vanities War by Elizabeth Marx
★★★★★
Release Date: October 24, 2011
Age: Young Adult
Genre: Fantasy, Magic, Urban Fantasy, Fairy Tales
Format: e-book
Source: Author via A Tale of Many Reviews Book Tours

Salem’s always held sinister secrets. No one understands this better than a sixteen-year-old girl who dies on Halloween night and is reborn a Seer. The Seer can’t imagine anything worse than being an invisible teenager with enormous black wings. Until she finds out she’s been sacrificed to watch over Locke’s new flame. Locke Cavanaugh is a Druid, and part of the Order, a clandestine organization entrusted with keeping its members cloaked in the Ordinary world. Physically scarred from the accident that took his girlfriends life, Locke is searching for the OtherWorldly magic that damaged him, because only those without blemish can rule the Order. And once at the helm of the Order he has every intention of finding those responsible for her death. On the West Coast, Keleigh Flaherty witnesses her parents’ murder by beasts that should only exist in nightmares. She is whisked off to the safety of Salem, where she learns how potent and dangerous her concealed Vate talents are. Keleigh wants to be Ordinary, but when her mother reaches out from the OtherWorld, and implores her to find a forgotten relic she’ll have to use all her ExtraOrdinary powers to locate it. As Locke and Keleigh join forces, they unravel the Order’s involvement in the witch hysteria and murmurs of a Celtic prophecy. While Locke’s affection for Keleigh blooms, The Seer is torn between her duty to protect Keleigh, and her desire to stop Locke from making the ultimate sacrifice in order to earn Keleigh’s love . . . But if they don’t find the witches bottle before the ShiningOnes do, someone stalking Keleigh from the shadows will take her instead and plunge all worlds into chaos.
New. Favorite. Series. I need the next book, now!

All's Fair in Vanities War is a magical story about all things ExtraOrdinary. It's a story about love and hate, and being what others need you to be even when it's hard. I felt a strong theme is the book is expectations, living up to them and tearing them down. Accompanied with great pacing, a writer who is well versed on the genre and characters who are incredibly real this book is destined for greatness. And I haven't even mentioned the magnificent cover!

All's Fair has a unique plot and some amazing characters. The Seer is our guide and narrator, and her story is one of heartbreak. It's a story that requires your full attention. The reader sees everything unfold through the Seers eyes and sometimes that can be confusing, but if you follow closely it's really well written and thought out. It's not the kind of book you can read quickly or skip around in, it requires thought and has many small details that are easily missed.

Locke is a disgruntled beast, he's scarred and feels undeserving of the role he should be playing in the story, but he still manages to be cocky and arrogant. Totally hot, right? I mean who doesn't love The Beast from Beauty and the Beast?

To complete our cast we have Keleigh she is our light in this journey and her story is one of hope, call her Belle if you need. A lot of the future is depending on her acceptance of this crazy OtherWorldly craft, which she has had no part of before coming into Locke's life. But, he's handsome when you put aside his attitude and the mystery surrounding him draws her near.

Along with the wonderful prose and an onslaught of mystical and witty characters there is an ever revolving plot that is intriguing and captivating. Battle scenes, witchcraft, healing, a murder mystery, secrets and lies, and so so so much more that I won't mention in fear of ruining something.

I loved this world that Miss Elizabeth Marx has created and managed to get myself completely lost in the power that emanates from her words. It's an amazing journey, nothing like I expected and completely full of surprises. Like I said, New Favorite Series, check it out!

Book Tour: Thin Air Review and Giveaway

★★★★☆
Release Date: August 2, 2011
Age: Young Adult
Genre: Fantasy, Romance,
Format: E-Book
Source: Author
Buy it: KindleNook
Alice Ayre is no ordinary teenager. She took her first name from a statue in Central Park, pulled her last name out of the air (literally), and she’s actually almost a thousand years old. In fact, the only “ordinary” thing about Alice is that she’s in love. Alice was a sylphid—a winged air spirit—when she spotted Daniel Field camping in the Adirondacks and lost her heart to the handsome NYU student. Intangible to the human senses, her only hope of winning his heart resides in becoming mortal, even though transmutation is forbidden by Paralda, ruler of the air. Risking punishment, however, seems a small price to pay for a chance at true happiness. Tracking down Daniel in New York City ends up being surprisingly easy. Getting noticed by him for all the right reasons is another story, especially when the human world keeps tossing challenges in Alice’s path. Just when she’s mastered zippers and buttons, she catches herself dropping a sugar packet into her coffee and mistaking a photo of John Lennon for one of Daniel’s relatives. Her eccentricities raise the occasional eyebrow with Daniel and his friends, but her quirky charm, sweetness, and sincerity win out. Before long, she lands a job, begins a relationship with Daniel, and starts settling into her new life—until her past comes after her. Enraged over Alice’s departure, Paralda has sent transmuted assassins to pursue her into the human world. A near-fatal fire on a camping trip and the murder of a look-alike employee at the club where Alice works convince her they are closing in fast. Alone with her secret–who would believe her?—Alice must elude a nameless, faceless enemy sworn to destroy the happy, new life she’s risked so much to achieve.
Thin Air is a wonderfully poetic kind of book. The story begins when Alice or Aeris, is an Air Spirit with blue hair, blue eyes, and transparent skin. She cannot find love in her realm of cloud making and peaceful existence and deep down seems to fear she never will. When she sees Daniel, a normal "En Why You" student everything changes for her. She finds herself thinking about him all the time and makes up her mind to become human to meet him, but once she does this she can never come back to her world.

The beginning, much like many fantasy books, has a lot of information to get a hold of. The elemental plane that Lynn describes is nothing like anything I've read in other books. It's original and very interesting to think about and at the same I could see it being a little confusing, so if you do decide to check it out (which I highly recommend) take your time reading it. The story has so many different things going on, it's a real page turner.

Alice's experiences when she becomes human and winds up in New York City are very cute and comical. Simple things are foreign to her and with some help she finds him, Daniel, but there's a catch and her name is Delilah. Delilah is kind of crazy, and I appreciated that about her, she's not going down without a fight, definitely respectable.

Alice reminded me a lot of Giselle from the Disney film Enchanted. I actually started picturing Alice as Amy Adams (with blonde hair). She has a light, carefree, sweet natured kind of personality that was so adorable to read about. Delilah was her stark opposite and that made things very interesting.

Throughout the book as Alice learns pain and drama her demeanor reflects that she becomes more well rounded but keeps her child like nature. Lynn Seresin does a wonderful job creating these two very different settings that Alice ventures through, the one she was born into and the one she chooses to be part of.

Lynn is a very talented author who has character making down to an art. In addition to Daniel and Alice we are introduced to all of Daniel's close friends. There is no shortage of funny one liners and adorable scenes featuring all of them. Normally I can pick a favorite background cast member, if you will, but in this book I loved them all so much. They are all very different and hilarious.

I really enjoyed Thin Air and this is definitely a love story, and it's done so well and includes so many other aspects from murder to adventure and friendship. It's a great book for fans of fantasy romance books. There are some sexually explicit parts, nothing too bad but I'd definitely say 13 and up for this one.

Book Tour: The Willows: Haven Tour Stop and Giveaway

★★★★☆
Publisher: Soul Fire Press
Age: Young Adult
Genre: Fantasy
Format: E-Book
When tragedy strikes, seventeen year-old Ashton Blake sets out on a cross-country road trip, leaving the comforts of Malibu for the mountains of Kentucky. Along the way, she encounters Gabe Willoughby—the mysterious drifter with eyes like the sea and a knowing smile. Getting to know Gabe raises questions about her past. But no secret can be buried forever, and Ashton soon finders herself in a world where water is air and myth becomes reality. Just as Ashton comes to accept her newfound heritage, she’s summoned to fulfill a treaty laid down centuries before — a treaty that will divide her love and test her loyalty. In the end, her future isn’t her biggest concern, her humanity is. To run may mean war, but is she strong enough to stay?
Haven is like a huge piece of red velvet cheesecake. Yes, that's a good thing.

Haven completely took me by surprise. It's original, fast-paced, and will keep you guessing. The characters you will meet when reading this spectacular book are some of the best villains and friends I personally have ever encountered. Hope Collier succeeds in creating a magnificent imaginative world of action and love that is sure to keep readers engaged.

The book starts off on the run, quite literally. It's Ashton's birthday and she's fleeing her own party. It's a page turner for sure, and a book that can be finished in one or two settings. While sometimes that's a bad thing in this case it's not. I couldn't put it down, and while I didn't want it to end I had to see what was going to happen and I was not disappointed. Hope Collier creates the perfect introduction into this book and series.

There are many well rounded and easy to love and hate characters throughout this book. My favorite would have to be the ever handsome Gabe. When we meet Gabe, in what seems like an accidental encounter, Ashton's life changes drastically. Now, weird things are happening. The fantasy aspect of the story is extremely refreshing and something I never expected. The settings described in this book are beautifully done, easy to visualize, and the mood Collier sets with well chosen words is always fitting. I will not go into what makes this book a fantasy because it's part of the surprise, there are reviews out there that will tell you and if you really want to know look for some of them. Learning Ash's past alongside her is part of the ride the reader should endure.

This book is definitely not lacking in the hot guy department or the who-should-she-choose department. It's got an amazing set of characters and the plot is unbelievable. I can't wait to read more about Ashton, the men in her life, and this new world she belongs to. It it the first book in the series, and there are few unresolved issues that I'm sure will work themselves out in books to follow.

I love the summary above, from Goodreads, it sums up this story perfectly without delving too much information. If The Willows: Haven sounds like your kind of read then check it out and if it doesn't check it out anyway!

Forbidden Temptation of a Vampire Review and Giveaway

★★★★☆
Release Date: April 22, 2011
Age: Young Adult
Genre: Paranormal Romance, Action, Vampires, Fantasy, Elves, Shapeshifters
Format: E-Book
Buy it: PaperbackE-Book
Is Jared an answer to prayer or her worst nightmare? Seventeen-year-old, Katie McQuillen is a halfling (vampire/elf mix) in a world where halflings are not acceptable members of polite society. Unfortunately, her grandpa is chairman of the Vampire High Council and she is forced into attending a summer camp meant to create peace between the Sídhí races. She is in the middle of Sídhí puberty going from scrawny to beach bunny in less than three weeks when she and her twin brother arrive at camp. Camp starts off with a bang when vampire hottie, Jared Andrews, becomes one of her new seven cabinmates, especially when he can't keep his eyes off her. But is he interested in her, her family's money, or her blood? She might actually enjoy summer camp, if she can stop finding dead bodies and if people stop trying to kill her.
Forbidden Temptation of a Vampire is one of those books that sticks with you far after the last page is read. It's intricate, detailed, and a well mapped out story that I'm so glad is one of more to come. For fans of the paranormal romance genre, or fans of young adult books in general, this book is pretty awesome.

In Forbidden Temptation of a Vampire, Jodie B. Cooper delivers a well developed and excellent story of love, suspense, action, and plenty of hilarious moments that will leave any reader grinning from ear to ear. It's the perfect combination of laugh out loud incidents and grind your teeth drama and mystery that also includes everything in between.

The characters are very human, even though they're not, easy to relate to for anyone because there are so many different personalities. I loved Sarah's character, bad ass outcast and exile (maybe that says something about me). The girl is a mystery, and it was interesting to see how the story unfolded. It's one of those books that keeps you guessing, and then you think you've finally figured it out, and something else happens that causes you to doubt previous predictions. And, I loved that about it, kept me on my toes. So much happens in this one book that there's never a dull moment.

I will say that first and foremost this book is a love story. Within all of it's paranormal elements: vampires, elves, shape shifters, and so much more, lies a very basic and beautiful almost Romeo and Juliet inspired story of forbidden love. At times the lines were cheesy and blush worthy, but overall it came across as sincere. I enjoyed the lifeMate aspect of the book, which is explained in the glossary at the back as: "two people drawn together by the synth crystal in their blood, who fall in love and bond,". It's an interesting spin on soul mates with an even deeper connection.

I can't wait to read more about this interesting world and delve deeper into the stories of these characters. Everyone is forcefully brought together with all of their differences and it's sometimes emotionally draining to keep up with all of them. A bunch of teenagers thrown into one camp together dragging all of their baggage around is quite a bit to deal with. Then add in suspicion, some jealousy, and discrimination and you've got yourself a party in Dragon Valley, kind of, I will say they do try and make the best of it.

I am a fan and cannot wait to check out some more of Jodie's work. She's an incredibly talented author who knows exactly how to connect with her readers. In addition to the glossary at the end of the story is also a map of the camp grounds, which I found to be a pretty neat feature.

Giveaway
Thanks to the amazing author I have a giveaway for you guys! There is also one going on at goodreads as well! It's for an E-Book version of Forbidden Temptation of a Vampire. Also, as a bonus the first and last person to enter the giveaway will win an E-Book version of Jodie's newest novella, Stolen. Which is a prequel of sorts to Forbidden Temptation of a Vampire. You don't have to be a blog follower to enter the giveaway. Now closed. Winners will be announced soon!

Stolen: Song of the Sídhí #3

Every vampire has a destined mate. Eric is Katrina's mate, but he doesn't know it. Katrina's high school rival literally steals Eric from her by twisting a very old 'unspoken' Sídhí law. It's a story about finding and losing what is most precious to a vampire, their mate. This story actually takes place prior to Forbidden Temptation of a Vampire. In Stolen, you will meet Jared and Clarisse, two characters from Forbidden.

Divergent Review and Giveaway

Divergent (Divergent #1) by Veronica Roth
★★★★★+
Release Date: May 3, 2011
Age: Young Adult
Genre: Dystopian, Science Fiction
Format: Hardcover
Series: Insurgent, book 2, due out 2012

In Beatrice Prior's dystopian Chicago, society is divided into five factions, each dedicated to the cultivation of a particular virtue—Candor (the honest), Abnegation (the selfless), Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful), and Erudite (the intelligent). On an appointed day of every year, all sixteen-year-olds must select the faction to which they will devote the rest of their lives. For Beatrice, the decision is between staying with her family and being who she really is—she can't have both. So she makes a choice that surprises everyone, including herself. During the highly competitive initiation that follows, Beatrice renames herself Tris and struggles to determine who her friends really are—and where, exactly, a romance with a sometimes fascinating, sometimes infuriating boy fits into the life she's chosen. But Tris also has a secret, one she's kept hidden from everyone because she's been warned it can mean death. And as she discovers a growing conflict that threatens to unravel her seemingly perfect society, she also learns that her secret might help her save those she loves . . . or it might destroy her.

Honestly, there is no way to explain in words the sheer greatness that is Divergent. It's an emotional journey that is best taken in first person. No review could do this story justice, but I'll try.

Beatrice is sixteen, and not even sure of when her birthday is. She has grown up in a faction where being selfless is the most important thing in life, but she's started wondering if that's true. She's a spunky girl, maybe too short and maybe too skinny but she goes after things whole heartedly. Her character reminded me of Katniss from Hunger Games and also of Katsa from Graceling.

Veronica Roth created a story that is set in the future, she created this world out of broken bits of failure. It's a different world than the one we live in, and the characters have to endure things that are completely unimaginable. But, she does it so well. The writing made me feel like I was there, alongside Beatrice and the other characters. Her writing is heartbreaking and hopeful at the same time. When you think everything is over and it's time to give up there's a small light to cling to. Some of the paragraphs were hard to read. Gut wrenching and terrible things occur between the pages.

My favorite thing about this book was the pacing. Every part seemed to fly by. Things happened so quickly and then more things would happen. I seriously could not tear my eyes away from the pages long enough to even sleep. It's not one of those books that beat around the bush, Veronica Roth is a very straight to the point kind of lady and I love that. Now, that said, there are a ton of surprises found in Divergent that are sure to make you curse out loud, or maybe that's just me.

Overall. Yes. Yes. Yes. Read Divergent. Get lost in this thrilling high suspense story. Find out what it's like to live on the edge of your seat and be reckless. I loved, loved, loved this book. Definitely my favorite book so far this year, if that means anything to anyone. Just read it!!
